Tighter controls on drinking alcohol in the streets are to be rolled out in parts of Fleetwood.

Wyre Borough Council is considering extending its Designated Public Places Orders (DPPO) scheme following success in other areas.

These orders allow police to request someone to stop drinking in a street or public place and confiscate the alcohol if necessary.

Anyone refusing to comply could receive a fixed penalty notice.

Prior to any decision being made about Phase Two of the scheme, which covers the coastal walk between Cleveleys and Fleetwood, the public is being given the chance to have their say.

Detailed maps of the areas affected can be found on the council's website at www.wyrebc.gov.uk or viewed at the Civic Centre in Poulton.

Comments can be made in writing to the Health & Safety and Licensing Manager, Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton, FY6 7PU, before December 31.

These will be considered by the licensing committee before any decision is taken.

Phase One was rolled out in parts of Fleetwood, Cleveleys and Poulton earlier this year in response to the number of incidents dealt with by the police where drinking outdoors has been a contributory factor.

Sergeant Gary Tunstall said: “The Designated Public Places Orders have provided us with a very useful tool to tackle alcohol driven anti-social behaviour.

“Support from the public has been fantastic.

"Once the community are made aware of these powers we have had little need to take enforcement action as most people are compliant.

"Those who ignore the orders have been taken to task and we have issued penalty tickets when appropriate."
