People spending a penny in Wyre can do so in five-star style, four times over.

Public toilets at Smallwood Hey in Pilling and Gubberford Lane in Scorton have been awarded five stars in the coveted Loo of the Year Awards 2008.

Both now take pride of place alongside the conveniences on Preston Street and Bold Street in Fleetwood which have previously been granted five-star status.

In fact, all of Wyre's entries into the competition fared well - there were four stars for the loos at Poulton's Teanlowe Centre, on Rough Lea Road and North Drive in Cleveleys, Fleetwood's Marine Hall and Barton Square in Knott End. Three stars were awarded to The Wiend in Great Eccleston.

Councillor Vivien Taylor, Living Places Portfolio Holder for Wyre Borough Council, said: “We have just come to the end of an extensive modernisation of Wyre's public toilets and success at the Loo of the Year Awards shows it was worth the investment.

“Thanks to our partnership with Danfo, all the toilets have either been replaced with completely new facilities or given a thorough facelift to ensure people can spend a penny in comfortable and clean surroundings.

“The fact that we officially have four five-star toilets in Wyre has left us quite literally flushed with success."

The annual awards are organised by the British Toilet Association and all entries are given a star grading from one to five following an unannounced inspection.

Criteria is quite involved and takes into account much more than just cleanliness and maintenance.

Entries are also judged on signage, fixtures and fittings, hygiene equipment, air quality, security and accessibility.
