Christmas bargain hunters in Fleetwood are in for a festive treat as the town prepares to unveil its annual market for a four-day stretch.

Traditionally the five day market has operated for just three days during the winter months.

But, following a successful trial last year, Fleetwood Market owner, Wyre Borough Council, has agreed to add a bonus day every Thursday to the winter opening hours.

It will mean that festive shoppers will be able to stock up on Christmas goods every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from Tuesday, November 4, until Tuesday, December 18.

The Victorian market, located in Victoria Street/Adelaide Street in the heart of Fleetwood's heritage area, has more than 200 stalls and is one of the oldest of its kind in Lancashire.

Although market rights were granted to Fleetwood Market in 1725 it wasn't until 1840 when the market was built under the leadership of Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood.

Over the years the building has stayed true to its Victorian heritage and has changed little despite an extension built 18-years ago.

With a selection of all the usual stalls the market attracts dozens of local people and is a popular destination for coach travellers making it one of the largest markets in North West of England.

Market manager Julian Brent said: “To encourage more people through the doors last year we added an extra day to our usual winter opening hours.

“This went down really well and we felt it was only fair to offer the same again this year.

“It will give shoppers an extra opportunity to stock up on their festive goodies at value for money prices. With the credit crunch upon us, more members of the public are shopping around for bargains.

“Where better than Fleetwood Market, with a current occupancy of 97 per cent and more than 250 stalls, we really can offer something to suit everyone's Christmas list.”

The market will open from 9am to 4.30pm.
