Blackpool's new-look supertrams were unveiled today ahead of their launch next year.

16 of the new vehicles, built by Bombardier, will begin to run on the tramway between Blackpool and Fleetwood from next Easter.

Blackpool has the UK’s longest-running tram system, having operated for 126 years.

Four million passengers catch a tram every year, with the majority travelling during the busy summer period.

The much-loved heritage trams will continue to run alternate services with the new vehicles.

Passengers will be able to choose which vehicle they want to use, old or new, with five-minute intervals between each service.

Coun Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: “Providing a modern tram service that operates as an effective transport system while still offering visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted views of our coastline is something unique to Blackpool."
