Electrical shops in Blackpool town centre are to use UV marking pens to tag each item sold with the customer’s details.
Operation Ho Ho Ho, funded by BSafe Blackpool, has been launched in partnership with police to tackle thefts of electrical equipment.
The plan, which is a collaboration between local electrical retailers and the Blackpool town centre neighbourhood policing team, includes eight of the town’s retailers including Currys, Game Station, Game, Vodafone, T mobile, Phones 4 U, O2 and 3 mobile.
PC Steve Jones from the neighbourhood policing team said: “The UV marking pens will be issued with appropriate crime prevention advice.
"This is the first time that electrical outlets have worked in conjunction with the police and other partners in this way.”
Tony Williams, chairman of BSafe Blackpool said: “This is a perfect example of how BSafe Blackpool is working together with local retailers in Blackpool helping to protect people’s property and safe guarding the community.
“I encourage everyone to take advantage of this initiative and security mark their property.”
