Lancashire police face funding black hole

LANCASHIRE police are set for a million-pound-plus gap in their finances because of a forecasted fall in income.

Expected cuts in central Government and council tax funding are expected to create a headache for all of England and Wales’ 43 police forces between now and 2014.

And while Lancashire Constabulary’s budget has yet to be set for that period, members of the police authority expect its black hole to run into seven figures.

The tightening of belts has already begun in the county, with the force aiming to make £3.6million in ‘productivity and effic-iency gains’ in 2009/10.

When these savings were announced in February, Lancashire Chief Constable Steve Finnigan said savings had been identified “across all our back office function in an attempt to protect front-line policing”.

Coun Malcolm Doherty, chairman of Lancashire Police Authority, said plans were now being made for savings in the coming years. To be totally honest, we don’t know how bad it will be at the moment,” he said.

“It is the wrong time of year for financial predic-tions.

“But obviously we know there will be cuts and the Government have told us so.

“We will be doing everything we can to avoid front-line cuts and I know the chief constable is looking to do things in a smarter more efficient way, rather than cutting serv-ices.”

In September last year funding for the constab-ulary’s 420 police comm-unity support officers was secured until 2011, after the Government committed to provide further funds.

But fears have been raised that the number of PCSOs on the streets could be cut after that time because of a lack of funding.

John O’Reilly, of the Lancashire Police Feder-ation, which represents rank and file officers across the county, said: “We have made it quite clear to the chief constable that we would not support any cuts in officer numbers.

“We want any reduction to be kept to the minimum possible and preferably zero.

“The public want to see officers on the streets.”

Lancashire Constabulary refused to comment on the speculation before its budget was set later this year.

Last week, Cumbria Police Authority revealed the force could face a £7.3million shortfall in its budget between next year and 2014.

It has said it would protect face-to-face policing, so any efficiencies made would be in backroom costs, rather than affecting front-line duties.

Supreme Leader Broon and his bagman lickspitle Balls keep telling the public there are to be no cuts. Obviously working on the old Stalinist principle that if you repeat the lie long enough and often enough the workers will belive it. NOT THIS TIME, SUNSHINE!!

Well, stop speeding and you'll pay less fines. Simple. (But probably not as simple as you)

Maybe Norman was alluding to others speeding because for sure the 'safety' cameras will be increased to get some more cash in and in reply to John O'Reilly in the article, the only time we see police on the streets is when they are pointing the speed cameras at us!(No happy cyclist, I have never been caught speeding because I don't)

The speed camera debate again ....Yawn
Do you realise that the money from these goes to the treasury not the police?!
The Police need to curtail spending hundreds of thousands on 'community' projects trying to please minority groups and bite the bullet by throwing everything at criminals or is that un P.C.?

Hi All.

I ask you all, 'WHERE IS THE CRIME'?

When the police talk of crme today they are speaking in terms of litter, parking, speeding, seat belts, mobile phone use in cars.

20 years ago none of the above were seen as crimes and the police spent their time catching real criminals.

It is like listening to a load of silly people talking silly things, and they believe they are contributing to our democracy....

It is this kind of tittle tattle that is destroying Blighty.

So the police have less money, stop using copious amounts of trees and lessen the paperwork.
Stop paying jumped up snotty kids to ride around on bycicles and tell lies to ensure they get kids in trouble.

get rid of traffic wardens and lets all park were we want like we used too.

Get rid of all the cameras, one less fat get sat in front of them all day to pay salary, and the upkeep of the cameras will save millions and not to mention the carbon footprint you all get excited about in running the CCTV Grid....

Teach the police to drive better so they do not keep crashing the cars we pay for...

I wonder if what the police are pushing for is some big landowning gentry to bust on trumped up statutes so they can take all your assets....

Do not forget the police are now a private company, answerable to 'PROFIT', and the Crown, no longer a service, but a dictatorial private group of adventurers, who get paid per man in cell per night, will soon get the revinue from cameras, they do get a % now, and they are to keep all bounty collected from those they deem criminal.

So on this basis given all the petty crooks are inside, it leaves only you wealthy bods left to secure your assets into the hands of the unlawful gang of the statutes....

Well maybe the police should stop wasting money, persecuting the BNP and start concentrating on the real criminals, how much as it cost harassing the LANCASHIRE FOUR, until the police start to concentrate on there job and stop acting as a political force, then the finances are never going to tally up.

I read about the Lancashire Four, you'd think the police would have better things to do than stop people posting leaflets.
