Ousted Lancashire County Council leader: I'm not bitter

ONE day Hazel Harding was earning around £48,000 as the leader of the fourth-largest council in the country, with thousands of employees under her, all working to do her bidding.

The next, she’d joined the thousands of other redundant workers across the country, stripped of her title, salary, and responsibilities.

“It’s not the way anybody wants to finish,” said Hazel, who lives in Crawshawbooth, of the moment she realised she’d lost her seat.

“Somebody said to me ‘All political careers end in tears’ and the vast majority of them do. But 24 years is a long time."

Hazel was one of three Labour councillors in Rossendale who lost their seats in a landslide victory for the Conservatives, a result widely attributed to the MPs’ expenses scandal.

“We saw it coming in the last fortnight,” she said. “It felt different. There’s a feeling when you’re out there knocking on doors, and it changed. Until then we’d had a very good reception, people were happy to talk about local issues, but in the last few weeks they just wanted to talk about how dreadful MPs were. I think they tarred all elected members with the same brush.”

But Hazel isn't bitter. “That's just the way it goes,” she said. “We benefited in the 80s. We were going around winning seats that we wouldn’t expect to win because people didn’t like Margaret Thatcher. They were never going to get rid of her by voting Labour in Rossendale, but that’s how it goes. Win some, lose some.”

Hazel’s only regret is the way that she and other former councillors have been treated.

“The worst part is that you don’t have a winding down period or a chance to say goodbye to people. You literally stop. One minute I was there every day, the next I can’t even enter the building without signing in as a visitor.

“It’s similar to being made redundant and being escorted out of the building. The next thing you hear from the council is a message saying, ‘Please can we get the IT equipment back, and by the way will you bring your ID badge in?’ It’s harsh.

“Lancashire County Council does lots of things well, but the way it deals with its elected members who are no longer councillors is not good. I've probably had it better than most because I’ve received letters from individuals saying ‘I'm sorry and I’m sure you'll find something else to do’, which was lovely.”

Not everyone has been so lovely.

“One of the worst things was on Friday after the count. I came home and there was an anony-mous message left on the answer machine of someone laughing their head off. They said: ‘It's all over now Hazel’. Those kind of things – the anonymous letters from the green ink brigade – I won't miss that.”

Other things she won’t miss include dealing with Friday evening complaints, and buffets at county hall (“It was death by vol au vont!”) Hazel hasn’t lined up a new job yet, but said: “I don’t see myself sitting doing nothing. I want to do something useful and worthwhile, probably in the public sector, whether it be a job or voluntary.”

And she’s not giving up on local politics altogether.

“I'll always be a member of the Labour Party. I can’t ever imagine not being,” she said.

“The only thing I’ve done longer than that is support Burnley Football Club! They both have their bad times, but at the moment Burnley are in the good times. I’ve already got my season ticket.”

Hazel admitted it may take time to form a new identity for herself.

“But I've never been someone who swanned around saying ‘I'm the leader of the fourth biggest council in the country’.

And she’s optimistic for the future. “I've been very fortunate," she said.

“I've been to places, met people, and done things that the vast majority of people never get to do and that’s something I'll never forget. I've made a difference in a small way and I’ve had lots of wonderful opportunities. I've always seen the glass as half-full.

“There’s life after politics, I'm sure.”

The inquest into the Labour rout is going to have to invent some external justifications to explain the debacle. As we know Mr Brown's Labour Party is infallible, has perfect policies and never makes a mistake.

What does she mean "Politics ends in tears?" Hazel you reap what you sow.

Hazel publicly gave the residents of Rossendale her personal guarantee that LCC had put the money aside for a new bus station in Rossendale. Well Hazel, where has it gone or are you going to pay up personally in line with your guarantee???

I like the statement that she is going to look for work in the Public sector. What she really means is that it is the only place a 'washed up old has been' can get well paid for doing very little!

I'm sure she hated the functions of public office. That's why she took advantage of so many trips to Westminister with her pal Janet Anderson MP, paid for by us the taxpayers.

I take it Hazel will have taken advantage of the 'Rolls Royce' final salary pension scheme whilst she was in office. That actually means she got a pension contribution worth about another 20% on top of her annual salary.

Don't feel sorry for Hazel, she's done very nicely out of us, the taxpayers!

Good riddance.
Now to get rid of our useless Labour MPs. Straw, Ussher, Pope, Anderson etc. OK, two have already stepped down, so should the others.

Looking at Hazel's fact File, I could not find anything that said she had the experience or expertise to run the fourth biggest county council. No wonder we are in such a mess.

Hazel you should have listened. you forced through the pennine reach despite the over whelming popoulation being against it, your arrogant officers just ploughed on regardless. Labours so called green policies have almost priced people out of work. anti car, anti truck. recycling for profit. i was a labour member for years but you sold your principals along with the hopes of working people.you ignored us at your peril, the labour dictatorship is at an end.

Always like it when someone blames the Tories for all the ills of the world.
Mike, I challenge you, as I have others, to remind us what exactly the Tories did wrong. BUT before you put pen to paper, research and think, then if you really believe the Tories were responsible for anything, please give a reasoned arguement.

Looking back at Labour's stewardship it's hard not to conclude that the Party has setout deliberately to alienate as many voters as humanely possible.

I think the story went something like this.

Right, let's start with the elderly. Let's close residential homes. That'll be a dead-cert for making sure the elderly don't vote for us. Good idea, say the assembled throng of Labour councillors.

What next?

Right, let's alienate as many mums and dads as possible. Building Schools for the Future is just the job for doing this. We can close and/or merge schools against parents wishes and generally bring about complete mayhem. Labour councillors shouted whooppeee but then realised there are parts of East Lancashire that are in the later stages of BSF, and this is some years away. Don't worry we can alienate all the mums and dads by putting all County Council schools onto the standard academic school year. In this way the poor folks of East Lancashire can then pay top-price for going away on holiday in the summer. Great! Super! Said Labour councillors.

Yes, but what about those whose mum and dad are no longer with them or don't have children? Ah! Tricky. I know! Let's wave-through the closure of Burnley A&E. That should do the trick.

Hang-on said a councillor what about those who no longer have a mam and dad, have no children and are so safety conscious that they never need to go to A&E?

Mmmmm .... you mean there are still people who support us? Afraid so, someone in the Labour Group shouted.

Gosh, we've alienated the elderly, the middle-aged and the young what more can we do?

I know! Let's make sure the jobs complete by alienating motorists. It's dead simple. In Pendle the gritting service is carried out under licence from the County by the Borough Council and they do a terrific job. Let's take it back in-house and make a complete hash of it so that when it snows the traffic on all the main roads in Pendle will grind to a halt.

And just to make sure that we drive our point home let's raise the Council Tax so that we can maintain our unbroken run of folks seemingly paying more for less.

Perfect.

Well said Doug Spencer, people like Mike Costa blame everything on the Tories with such narrow minded remarks as 'those southern toffs'. Most Conservatives are NOT 'toffs' and NOT 'southern'. In my town we have a local LABOUR who I could call a Southern toff went to public school, Oxbridge etc and our Conservative candidate is a born and bred working class local lad. Labour has brought this country to its knees in the last 12 years so don't you dare call me 'gullible' for voting Conservative. Labour has done nothing for the North and I say good riddance to them. Please get your facts straight before you go around spouting venom in future.
