Morrisons in Blackpool has become one of the first supermarkets in the UK to introduce a high-tech queue management system which could cut waiting times for customers at the checkouts.
The installation of the iQM system, which is unique to Morrisons and will be rolled out across 300 of the supermarket’s stores across the country, follows a successful trial which cut queuing times for shoppers by five per cent.
Infra-red technology records the number of shoppers entering stores and then compares that to the average length of a sale and the average time taken to serve shoppers at the store’s checkouts.
Store staff can then calculate the exact number of tills which will be needed to speed those shoppers through the tills – making sure the right number of checkout operators are in place to help customers as they finish their shop.
Sylvia Jones, Head of Retail Operations for Morrisons, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer our customers an even faster route through our checkouts by investing in the latest technology.
“This is an exciting and innovative approach which will deliver real benefits to all our customers and enables us to offer the best possible customer service to everyone who shops with us.”
