The fire which destroyed Fleetwood Pier this morning is currently being treated as "unexplained".
A spokesman from the fire service said the blaze, which happened at 4.30am, has been put out apart from small pockets of flames.
But the fire has wrecked the pier and detective chief inspector Brian Quinn, of Lancashire Police, said the structure is too unsafe to enter.
He said the blaze is currently being treated as "unexplained" and a full investigation will take place tomorrow or Thursday.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "As of 2pm our operation was scaled down and there were four firefighters and two aerial ladders remaining at the scene.
"The fire is pretty much out but there are small pockets that keep reigniting around the sides of the pier."
People who may have witnessed something and can help police and fire investigators with the investigation into the cause of the blaze are asked to call 08451 253545.
