Pogo along to Blackpool's punk festival

The spirit of 1977 will be alive and pogoing in Blackpool at the weekend as the resort plays host to the ultimate social event in the punk calendar.

Rebellion is a four-day festival of all things punk, centred on the Winter Gardens.

Around 100 bands will play a variety of stages and there will be dozens of stalls selling T-shirts, CDs, DVDs and other memorabilia celebrating the influential music and fashion movement.

Rebellion was held for the first time in August 2006, when thousands of music lovers from all over the country and overseas arrived at the seaside determined to ensure that the spirit of punk lives on.

This year’s event begins today and carries on until Sunday, August 10, with a host of star names from the original movement alongside younger bands who engender the punk ethic.

There will be two appearances from Goldblade, fronted by punk author and one of the festival’s organisers, Blackpool’s John Robb.

He said: “Rebellion will feature some great bands and will attract people to Blackpool from all over the world.

“It’s such a big social event too with so many creative people around and the feedback I’ve had is that Blackpool is the perfect place for a festival like this.” Other confirmed bands include Cockney Rejects, Cocksparrer, Bad Manners and UK Subs with the zany Dickies, famous for their cover of Nelly the Elephant.

A Night at the Opera, at The Opera House, will feature The Rezillos and the highly influential Northern Irish legends Stiff Little Fingers.

Among the more extravagantly named bands making an appearance are Drongo's for Europe, Devilish Presley, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Peter and the Test Tube Babies.

Weekend tickets are £85 with day tickets for Thursday at £15 and the other days £30.

Tickets can be obtained from www.rebellionfestivals.com.
