THE LEADER of Lancashire County Council has clashed with the Government over plans for directly-elected police and crime representatives.
Coun Harding is one of 12 senior Labour figures who have signed a letter to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, saying the powers should instead be given to councillors.
The government claims that the representatives, who would sit on crime reduction partnerships and make up the majority on police authorities, would make the force more accountable to the public.
But opponents say it will threaten the role of councils.
And Coun Harding said: “I just think at the moment we have enough issues trying to get people out to vote without having even more elections.
“This has never been part of our electoral system and I don’t think it’s the right time now.”
Councillors are to try and get the plan dumped before Labour’s next general election manifesto is drawn up.
