Holidaymakers urged to get health insurance cards

LANCASHIRE people planning to travel to the continent this year are being reminded that their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) may not be valid leaving them without vital medical cover.

Three million EHICs will expire between September 2008 and March 2009.

The EHIC entitles travellers to reduced cost or free healthcare in most European countries.

Most assume they are covered by their travel insurance - however, often the policy is invalid without an EHIC.

Cards can be renewed up to six months in advance.

  • To renew or obtain an EHIC, log on to www.dh.gov.uk/travellers or call 0845 606 2030.

For further information call the EHIC enquires line on 0845 605 0707.
