Former Blackpool leader to stand as Labour candidate

3:16pm Wednesday 14th May 2008

Former Blackpool council leader, Roy Fisher, has been selected as the candidate to contest the vacant seat in Park Ward left by the death of Coun Les Kersh last week.

The election is expected to take place on Thursday June 26.

Mr Fisher said: "It is a great honour to have been selected to succeed Coun Les Kersh as the Labour candidate for this election in Park Ward.

"Les was a respected, reliable and hard working councillor who represented the ward for 25 years.

"He made a great difference to the lives of the residents of the ward and I would like to continue his good work alongside his fellow Park Ward representative Brian Doherty."

Mr Fisher was ousted from his seat following last year's local elections in the town which saw the ruling Labour group lose power to the Conservatives.

Coun Kersh, 69, who represented the Park ward for almost 25 years, died on Sunday, April 20, after a prolonged period of ill health.
