Bosses at ReBlackpool have today submitted their planning application for the People's Playground project.

The project is aimed at transforming the resort's famous coastline, by developing a "world class urban park" along the Promenade, with six headlands.

The application is to create the park within 10.5 hectares of the Promenade.

The development, which is subject to BIG Lottery and North West Development Agency funding, would see the creation of a spectacular night time landscape, illuminated by the Northern Lights.

Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool, said: "We are getting closer to realising the vision for the People's Playground. Back at the end of May, we submitted the application for funding from the Big Lottery Living Landmark's programme, detailing our vision for the scheme.

"This latest application reinforces our commitment to deliver high quality, exciting public space in Blackpool and we hope to secure planning permission before the end of the year."

The plan also includes public art, performance and event space and recreational facilities which will ensure visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the unique atmosphere and participate in a wide variety of healthy activities.

The submission also includes detailed information for the area between the Sandcastle and Wellington Road, with landscaping, the development of a management and visitor education centre, performance area and cafe and restaurant facilities all planned.

The application follows a consultation period in which residents were invited to vote on how they wanted to see the 3.2km stretch of coastline from South Pier to North Pier transformed.

Plans from landscape architects LDA Design were subsequently chosen from a shortlist of seven.

"We met with the local groups for their opinions on what should be in the scheme and make sure that whatever was built on the headland was going to be something that they could use," said Mr Garrett. "One example of change arising from the local consultations is our meeting with the local music groups. Their wish for better performance facilities enabling Blackpool to host concerts on the Promenade will become a reality should the application be approved."

A decision on the application is expected in the next few months.
