Teacher jailed for sex assault

A teacher who sexually assaulted a pupil has been sent to prison for nine months, 30 years after he committed the offences.
Geoffrey Cassidy, from Lytham, who was then aged 25, kissed and intimately touched a 15-year-old girl who had developed a crush on him at a Sheffield school.
But his past caught up with him two years ago when police spoke to the victim.
By that time, Preston Crown Court heard, Cassidy, 55, of Coronation Road, had become a highly regarded figure, dedicated to teaching and involved with choirs.
At the time of his arrest he was director of music at Rossall School, Fleetwood. He has since resigned.
He also worked at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School in Lytham for nine years.
At an earlier hearing Cassidy pleaded guilty to five charges of indecent assault, dating back to the 1970s.
Miss Alison Heyworth, prosecuting, said in a statement, the pupil had described his arrival at Myers Grove school as a breath of fresh air. In her eyes he was charismatic and inspirational.
She became infatuated with him, and in her own words, her world revolved around him.
The girl became so involved with her music that she would skip class and not concentrate on her lessons, because she wanted to be in his presence.
Cassidy would kiss her for up to 15 or 20 minutes at a time after she had gone to his office. Things progressed to him intimately touching her under her clothing, while kissing her. She "put up with it" because she was getting attention and was afraid to speak up.
The offences occurred over a three month period until the girl left the school.
When police spoke to Cassidy he admitted having had inappropriate contact with the girl, involving kissing and touching her body.
But in his view it had not been sexual, more tender. He denied touching her naked skin.
Defence barrister Mr Chris Hudson described Cassidy as a man of "impeccable" previous good character.
He said the girl had had a crush on the defendant. He was flattered and had feelings for her. What happened was consensual.
Judge Stuart Baker told Cassidy he abused the trust, not only of the girl, but of her parents and the school authorities.
"You knew very well what you were doing was going substantially beyond the balance of what could ever be acceptable pupil/teacher behaviour," he said.
Cassidy will be on the sex offenders' list for ten years.

I know, what you are doing is good PR, but nothing about these laws is legal, and you know that. This is in direct violation of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Please educate yourself and quit trying to "look good" to the public so you get voted for again.
What happened to this kid is a horrific, but why punish millions of people, which includes low risk offenders, their families and children? About 90-95% of the people on the registries are not predators, or pedophiles, and many are trying to live a normal live, which you are making it impossible to do.

Look at Georgia registry, it has one person on there born in 1991, and if you look at other state registries, like Kansas, there is 13 and 14 year old kids on there with all their info. Does that make ANY since to you?

Just examine the Department of Justice web site, they have the facts, and talk with therpists. It needs to be mandatory for ALL criminals to get therapy, where needed, and if they deny it, then they remain in jail until they change their mind.
Therapy works. But when you throw someone in prison, without therapy, for many years, how can you expect them to come out ok? You have to provide them with the tools to change their behaviors. Without this, nothing will work.
I hope and pray someone, somewhere will listen to what therapist and other advocates are saying. Any abuse is wrong, period, but it's nothing new, it's been around since the dawn of time. But has only recently been made into hysteria and a modern day "witch hunt" due to the media, and uneducated policitians who are using children for votes. And this is totally sick.

Just examine the Department of Justice web site, they have the facts, and talk with therpists. It needs to be mandatory for ALL criminals to get therapy, where needed, and if they deny it, then they remain in jail until they change their mind.
Therapy works. But when you throw someone in prison, without therapy, for many years, how can you expect them to come out ok? You have to provide them with the tools to change their behaviors. Without this, nothing will work.

I can't help wondering why the woman reported the incidents now. I note "the police spoke to the victim", not the other way round. Were they on a fishing trip? Must have been a slow crime day.

I`m glad that most of your other contributors are not teaching my Daughter.
This man is a sex offender. He got away with sexually abusing a pupil for 30 years. Had he been caught at the time he
might have got 2 years jail and would definitely have lost his job.
So he has not done that badly.
Its also about time that we got a bit tougher , even on old
perverts.
