Like Josephine Harwood I am also relieved to learn that another Blackpool pet shop has stopped selling puppies and I agree with her when she says that there is no need for pet shops to sell any live animal when local sanctuaries are stretched to the limit with all creatures great and small (Citizen May 18).

There are four good reasons in favour of adopting a pet from an animal sanctuary: - you will not only be saving the life of one animal but two, as adopting one means you are making room for another unfortunate creature to come into the safety of the sanctuary for re-homing.

- you will know exactly what you are getting, as far as temperament is concerned, as the pet will have been assessed.

- it will be in good health as it will have been vet checked and treated for ailments, wormed and flea treated.

- dogs and cats if they are old enough, will have been neutered, so you won't have that expense to deal with.

So, if you are wanting a new pet, keep the above points in mind.

Please visit one of our local sanctuaries so that you not only come home with a new pet, but peace of mind that it is healthy and the satisfaction of knowing you have made room for other unwanted creatures to have a second chance of life.
