I was very relieved to learn that another pet shop has stopped selling puppies in Blackpool.
Personally, I think there is not need for any pet shop to sell live animals.
Whatever pet you want there is usually a local breeder but, most importantly, our hard working sanctuaries are always overflowing with all types of pets ageing from newborn to golden oldies.
Their sole aim is to re-home a pet to a suitable home, not make a profit out of it. They don't run a business like a pet shop, the welfare of the animals come first and foremost hence home visits and interviews with prospective owners are undertaken.
Of course they have to ask for a donation, but that is for the food and care of the animals waiting to be re-homed, not wages for staff.
Pet shops only encourage irresponsible pet owners to NOT have their pets neutered/spayed and let them breed continuously and puppy farms, to keep their cages stocked at the expense of the health and welfare of the animals.
They would survive perfectly well selling food, toys and accessories etc.
