I read your article (Citizen, September 4), about the building of a Primary Care Centre in St Annes, with much interest.
How sensible, they are building it on derelict industrial land.
Judging from the picture in the paper (left) neither is it going to be an ugly building i.e. too huge or with a flat roof.
Now I am going to come to the point I want to make.
Poulton is planning a new medical centre.
I have been to the Civic Centre to have a look at the plans and I am absolutely appalled for the following reasons: a) It is going to be built in the Memorial Park! The park in Poulton is already small but what a lovely green island enjoyed by all age groups.
It has a playground. I have heard the tennis courts will have to go. If it is used for the Medical Centre there will not be much of the park left.
In order for it to be built, beautiful old trees will have to be cut down. Is that legal?
How can the park be used, as it is a Memorial Park?
b) The planned building is huge and ugly. It consists of a three-storey buildings with flat roofs with a courtyard in the middle! And that right in the middle of a beautiful old market town, so near to the wonderful old church - it leaves you speechless.
c) There are two other sites which could be used. The derelict site on Station Road and an empty building with lots of car park space on Garstang Road so why destroy the park?
Lots of people don't know this is all being planned and everyone I have spoken to during the past few weeks feels exactly as I do.
Don't we have a say? We have given the councillors our vote in good faith that they would represent us and our values.
I feel sad, disappointed and furious.

The area of the Vicarage Park designated to the development comprises 5% of the total area and does not encroach upon, or even get close to, the Jean Stansfield Memorial Park. As part of the overall scheme a substantial sum is being spent on the 95% of the Park remaining which will broaden its appeal to the public in general. Some tree felling will have to take place and this has been worked out in close co-operation with the Parks Dept to minimise loss and new planting will take place to compensate.
The tennis courts are to be resited and will be built to the highest ITF standards so there will be no loss of amenity.
The building itself has been the subject of extensive discussion with the planners and has been designed so that the impact on the Park and the local street scene is kept to a minimum.
The other sites mentioned have been considered, as have about twelve others, and each has been discounted for reasons including cost, size, position and availabilty.
Finally,on a point not raised by Ms Whitehead but aired by a number of others, the traffic situation has been carefully reviewed and the impact has been assessed a minimal. However a scheme has now been submitted which will improve the traffic flow through Poulton to the levels of 5-10 years ago as well as improving the poor air quality in Chapel St.
Add to all this the massively enhanced service the two medical practices will offer, the benefits to Poulton and its residents are enormous
