I am writing on behalf of the Meningitis Trust to thank a group of 23 supporters who took on a gruelling mountain marathon - trekking England's eight notable 3000ft peaks in the Lake District - to raise funds for our work.

The team, who are all employees of FOCUS DIY and come from across the UK, raised a huge £12,685 for us by covering a total distance of 47 kilometres/29 miles over three days.

The money they have raised is invaluable to us and will be used to provide practical and emotional support to families and individuals in the UK, whose lives have been shattered by meningitis.

The team provide real inspiration to others thinking about taking on a challenge for charity.

They have selflessly given up their time over the last few months to train for this event and as well as raising vital funds for us, have also raised awareness of the disease - which may save lives in the future.

With as many as 500,000 people living in the UK who have had either viral or bacterial meningitis, and up to one adult in every four knowing of someone who has had the disease, our ongoing work is much-needed.

We are reliant on voluntary donations to continue our work, so fundraisers such as this team make a huge impact to the work we do.

We are always looking for people to help with the work of the Trust by getting involved in fundraising - whether it's taking on a once in a lifetime challenge, or holding a sponsored Coffee Break, you can be assured that your efforts will make a difference to thousands of families who are struggling to cope with the impact of meningitis right now.
