The Café de Paris offers exactly what you would hope for - a taste of Paris with a hint of je ne sais quoi'.

Chic but without pretension, this lovely little brasserie looks out onto Clifton Square, very much Parisian pavement cafe culture, so come well wrapped up!

The menu was a refreshing change, varied and interesting, but not overbearing.

As it was our first visit, we couldn't resist the French onion soup, which proved an excellent starter to delightful meal, rich, tasty and beautifully presented.

For mains, I opted for crab and avocado salad while my friend ordered a jacket potato with tuna, sweet corn and side salad.

They looked almost too good to eat; the salads were out of this world, generous portions and thoroughly satisfying.

Despite the sticky table tops, I will certainly visit Café de Paris again to sample some of the other delights on the menu, such as the Croque Monsieur, the translation - cheese and ham on toast- simply doesn't do justice to the colourful dishes floating by. The omelettes, baguettes, and even decorated croissants, all looked delicious too.

And the desserts in the fridge were very tempting though we managed to resist.

The Café de Paris serves meals until 5.30pm, after which it becomes more of a wine bar with just tapas on the menu, all under £5, until closing time which ranges from 8pm early in the week to 1am at weekends.

It serves various bottled beers (£3), a few beers on tap, and has a healthy wine, spirits and cocktail menu.

Prices are reasonable, our bill, which included a glass of wine, a soft drink and two coffees, was £25.

How did it fare? (out of six stars): Food ***** Drink ***** Service *** Atmosphere ***** Value ****
