Overlooking the beautiful Forest of Bowland by the banks of the Lancaster Canal stands the Mill Inn at Thurnham.

This delightful spot used to be an old grain mill not far from Condor Green. It was converted in 1992 and is now an award-winning pub/restaurant with the added benefit of 15 pretty ensuite bedrooms.

We arrived on a very blustery, but sunny Saturday lunchtime and soon found ourselves very snug in the warm and cosy atmosphere. There are flagged floors and original beams and we chose a table directly overlooking the canal in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

The menu offers meals to cater for all tastes and pockets, including sandwiches, soup, a speciality deli board through to the traditional favourites such as chicken, fish dishes, lasagne and vegetarian options.

I chose a bowl of piping hot leek soup. It was served with warm, freshly-baked bread and was absolutely delicious. Just the job on a cold day! My partner had baked field mushrooms stuffed with Welsh rarebit....so tasty.

For mains I selected grilled salmon and spinach roulade served with a pink prawn sauce. This was perfectly cooked and thoroughly enjoyable.

My other half chose Cumbrian Fell-bred beef burger with grilled bacon, cheese and hand cut chips. Very naughty but hastily consumed. The couple of chips I pinched were dangerously delicious!

There is a tempting choice of desserts offering all the favourites from bread and butter pudding to fruit crumble . . . but we were too full.

The staff were very friendly and efficient. The Mill Inn has a great range of guest beers and wines and there is also a function room for parties. It is a perfect base for walkers and cyclists and I can't wait to visit again in better weather to enjoy its pretty gardens and Bowlandscenery.

How did it fare? (put of six stars): Food 5 Drink 5 Service 5 Atmosphere 6 Value 4
