La Mezzaluna is part of The Venue, a multi-level bar and restaurant complex on Cleveleys Promenade.

The first floor restaurant has a Mediterranean and Italian menu which offers a wide range of dishes from pasta and pizza dishes priced between £7- £10 to more specialised meat and seafood options which cost in the £12-£18 bracket.

The dining area is spacious and refined, with sea views from all the tables and a large central bar serving draught continental beers such as Kronenbourg.

Starter of goats' cheese stack was a whole inch thick disc of warmed creamy cheese, served between wholemeal discs of fried crouton.

The cheese had a pleasant salty kick, although the crouton was slightly burned. What made the dish though was the addition of a well presented rocket salad with a hint of pesto which complemented the cheese well.

Another starter of salmon coquille was offered up in a seashell dish and the poached chunks of salmon with creamed potatoes and parmesan were soon demolished.

A main course of fillet Mezzaluna was seared strips of tender steak in a brandy sauce, again the accompaniments were spot on, those being garlicky saute potatoes and crisp stir-fried vegetables.

Pan ffried sea bass came with seasonal savoy cabbage and vine tomatoes, a good contrast to the cream and wine sauce.

Desserts of Italian ice-cream and a well-executed creme brulee kept up the high standard.

Our meal was washed down with a bottle of house merlot, a full bodied wine which did not stretch the budget at £10.

Service was unobtrusive and polite throughout.

La Mezzaluna is certainly a good reason to visit Cleveleys, even on a cold, wet day.

How did it fare? (put of six stars): Food 5 Drink 4 Service 5 Atmosphere 4 Value 4
