Various Artists - Club Dread (Sanctuary) Album Out July 5

A Penny Marshall Film. Starring Robin Williams. There are film tag lines designed to cut public opinion as surely and as irrevocably as cheese wire through prime cheddar. From the warped minds who bought you super troopers is one of those film tags. Lord knows what Club Dread will be like and my minds made up as well as your's. The film's saving grace could be this curious soundtrack.

Culled from Sanctuary Records' extensive ska and reggae catalogue all the big reggae names are here - Marley, Toots, Dekkar, Perry. But the track listing is incongruous: The happy-go-lucky Monkey Ska by Derrick Harriot from 1965 is followed by Dillinger's Cocaine In My Brain - a glassy-eyed coked out classic from 1979. Think Gerry and the Pacemakers segued into The Ruts and you're only half way there; Fine apart, but together as tasty as fine whiskey followed by a cup of warm milk.

The 'bonus tracks' are equally confusing: Pioneers Longshot Kick De Bucket nestles uneasily with Felix Da Housecat's version of Yellowman's Party. The 'cutting edge electroclash auteur', as he is known by style magazine mavens, gets about as avant garde as Reel2Real's I Like to Move It. A track which neatly sums up this curious soundtrack.
