Nursery pupils grow lunch

I have been getting good feedback from this column and this week I was delighted to hear from Grosvenor Nursery in Lord Street, Kearsley.

The youngsters are growing a selection of their favourite vegetables which they cook and eat as part of a healthy-eating plan.

The nursery has about 100 pre-school children aged up to five.

Headteacher Maureen Vickers said the children love growing vegetables and take delight in seeing which plants are growing the most.

"The plot is about 6ft by 12ft and we have an outdoor classroom where children can look at wildlife. We have been developing the grounds as we are members of the Woodland Trust.

"We moved here three years ago, but kept a lot of the land from the old site and we started the garden last year.

"We are also growing 30 saplings donated by the trust to replace trees lost in the storms." Teacher Diane Smith says the children are growing peas, onions, runner beans, tomatoes and potatoes.

"We will start growing lettuce after the half-term. The plants are doing all right even though the soil is not very good.

"What we grow we like to eat, so we have jacket potatoes and salads with vegetables in school. We are hoping to get the Healthy School status from Bolton LEA soon."
