I learned two things from this week’s telly: midwives are angels on earth and Amanda Holden is actually quite nice.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge swapped her usual glamorous get-up for surgical scrubs for the ITV documentary Out of My Depth.

Cameras followed Amanda as she underwent a five-week crash course on the basics of midwifery. I wonder how much persuading it took to convince one mum to be to have Amanda deliver her baby. But it made gripping reviewing.

I was unconvinced at first, expecting the usual bad jokes and crocodile tears from the mildly irritating actress, but I was pleasantly surprised by her dedication. The staff seemed genuinely impressed by her progress and once she’d forgotten the cameras were there she actually did very well.

The nation wept when the baby was delivered blue and limp. The midwives were just amazing as they calmly brought the little tot to life and Amanda wasn’t half bad either as she effectively reassured the new mum. And with a happy ending with a healthy little boy and mum doing well, everyone felt a new-found respect for midwives.

I wonder what they’ll do next. How about Piers Morgan joins the fire service or Kelly Brook turns dentist. No, wait, I’ve got it — Ant and Dec become an ambulance driver and paramedic duo. Now there’s a must watch.
