IT’S funny that what amounts to little more than a bunch of blokes with poor dress sense wandering around a field hitting balls with sticks can be such compelling viewing.

Unless your TV’s broken you cannot help but fail to have noticed that the British Open has formed the cornerstone of the Beeb’s output this weekend.

Poor old Beeb, it hardly gets any sport of note to cover these days so you can be sure that when it does, it does so royally.

Even if you don’t like golf – there is one famous description of the game a “a good walk spoiled” – the drama of the past two days at Royal Birkdale will surely have captured your attention over the weekend.

The Open coverage represents what the BBC does so well.

By blending the avuncular presence in the commentary box of Peter Alliss with the likes of Sam Torrance and Ken Brown (all former pros) you get an insider’s view of the game – and no little humour thrown in.

Unlike, say Sky, the BBC tends to keep it relatively simple, tell the viewer what’s happening and let the pictures tell the story.

That’s not to say coverage hasn’t escaped the boffins totally – computer generated holes and stats about trajectories have been making an appearance but it actually enhances the viewer’s enjoyment.

Now will they let Gary Lineker out of his glass box?

It's MOST infuriating!

I've spent a lifetime, trying to educate the Canadian and American Media to call The Open Championship by its proper name.

I've had, although I hesitate to say so, some success.

Then along comes some pipsqueak, from the 'This is Lancashire' stable, to have the temerity to use the completely erroneous title of 'British Open'.

To call The Open Championship the 'British' Open is to show ignorance on so many levels.

You might just as well call the F.A Cup the football Championship of the United Kingdom or the prestigious All England Club, 'The Wimbledon Tennis Ground' or Lords, 'The St. John's Wood Cricket Ground'!

Proper names deserve to be called by their correct name. John Anson would not appreciate being called Johan Adison, I think?

The Open Championship, whatever one thinks of Golf, is the oldest Golf Tournament in the world and deserves to be respected.

Well said, Rovers Fan (and compliments on your taste in football teams, sir). I had exactly the same feeling of horror when I saw the heading on this. We gave the Americans the English language and now we are taking it back in its Americanised form! The Open Championship is the oldest golf tournament in the world (dating from 1860!) and is only referred to as 'the British Open' (pronounced 'Briddish') by Americans to distinguish it from one of their three majors, the US Open. For British media to copy this reference is the height of ignorance about our sporting heritage. Have some respect for our magnificent sporting heritage, please.
