Two of Cumbria’s train operators have joined forces on a Dragon’s Den-style scheme to boost innovation in the rail industry.

Northern and TransPennine Express together with LNER and Southeastern, are looking for tech startups to apply to Future Labs, a scheme aiming to ‘accelerate ideas’ addressing rail sector issues.

Successful applicants will gain access to industry data and resources, as well as mentors and subject matter experts working for the train operators to bring their ideas to life.

Then they will apply, test, and demonstrate their ideas over 12 weeks.

A spokesperson on behalf of the four train operators said the scheme focuses on ‘transforming the rail industry’ via innovation.

“Ultimately, this is all about advancing the passenger and employee experience as well as supporting performance and operational excellence,” they added, citing the AI platform Amygda as a success story for the scheme.

Applications are now open, and the deadline is June 16, 2024.
